Remigio Pianu is a martial arts instructor, researcher, and author dedicated to the study, preservation, and transmission of traditional martial knowledge.

His martial journey began in 1994 and has developed through more than three decades of study, practice, and teaching. Over the years, he has explored both modern and traditional disciplines, combat sports, Filipino martial arts, and European fighting systems, developing an approach founded upon practical experience, continuous research, and a deep interest in the principles that unite different martial traditions.

Rather than viewing martial arts as a collection of techniques, he has always sought to understand the deeper mechanisms that govern combat: timing, distance, strategy, adaptability, and the process through which knowledge is transmitted from one generation to the next.

This pursuit led him to study a variety of fighting systems and to learn from instructors representing different traditions, helping him develop a perspective that combines practical application, historical awareness, and critical inquiry.

From Practice to Research

Alongside his teaching activity, a significant part of his work is dedicated to historical research and the preservation of martial heritage.

The study of Italian martial traditions is approached not only from a technical perspective, but also through the analysis of historical sources, documentary evidence, and the cultural processes that allowed certain forms of knowledge to survive into the modern era.

Over time, this commitment has resulted in the publication, translation, and editorial development of works dedicated to martial arts, historical fencing, and the transmission of traditional knowledge.

The Traditions Represented

Today, his work is primarily focused on the preservation and transmission of two living Italian martial traditions.

The first is the Sicilian tradition of knife and stick fencing transmitted through the school of Master Raffaele Irmino, a figure who dedicated his life to the preservation of an important martial heritage.

The second is the Cielo e Meraviglia tradition, an agro-pastoral system of knife and stick fencing from the Ofanto Valley in Apulia, transmitted through Master Domenico Mancino.

Although these traditions developed within different historical and social environments, both preserve principles, methods, and knowledge that form an important part of Italy’s martial heritage.

Teaching

Teaching occupies a central role in his work.

Through regular classes, private instruction, seminars, and instructor development programs, his goal is not merely to teach techniques, but to help students understand the principles that govern combat.

Particular emphasis is placed on tactical reasoning, distance management, timing, and the ability to apply principles effectively in changing circumstances.

For him, a martial tradition survives only when it is properly understood, practiced, and transmitted.
